|Over 25,000 years ago, a glacier driven south by the last Ice Age carved a perfect basin out of the granite Ontario bedrock. Millennia later, as the glacier retreated, it left the granite basin behind, filled with one of the largest sources of pure freshwater in North America. Today, it is known as the Georgian Bay. The lands along the bay were the domains of the Hurons long before the first European settler arrived. It was the happiest of hunting grounds, ringed by abundant fresh water, evergreen forests, fertile fields and the scenic Blue Mountains to the southwest. All of the elements were in place. It was the perfect spot on Earth for distilling Canadas true whisky.
By the 1840s, European settlers began to arrive in significant numbers, and the town of Collingwood grew and prospered on the shores of the Georgian Bay. But it wasnt until 1967 that Collingwood fulfilled its great promise for distilling. That year the Canadian Mist distillery was built, producing the first whisky in the world to source its water from the Georgian Bay.
