Wine Advocate 89 points - Sage, mint, and citrus rind pungency in the nose as well as considerable cut on the rather full palate of the Dirlers’ 2009 Riesling Saering are very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage at this address. But while there is some sense of succulence to the black currant-tinged, pungently herbal (rather Sauvignon-like) palate impression, as well as an undeniably impressive grip and a touch of welcome, saliva-inducing salinity, one doesn’t derive the refreshment that accrued to the corresponding Belzbrunnen. Plan on drinking this over the next 4-6 years. (May 2011)

This biodynamic domaine, long considered the northern star for fruit driven, dry-fermented wines, is located in Bergholtz, Haut-Rhin. Jean Dirler and Ludivine Cade fastidiously tend nine pristine Grand Cru vineyards and lieu-dits planted to Alsace’s most classic varietals. Respect for the land and commitment to quality is reflected in their methods: biodynamic viticulture is practiced, including the use of herbal treatments, horse plowing in the vineyards, and natural fermentations for the wines. From sparkling Cremant, to Sylvaner, Pinot Gris and Riesling, the magic of ”soil to glass” is captured as nowhere else in Alsace.
