Elegant and refined in the Croft style, the house?s vintage ports are characterized by cool, integrated black fruit, firm acidic structure and a reticent backbone in youth, gaining grace, complexity and lovely fruit and coffee complexity with age.
Vinous 91 points - Saturated deep ruby to the rim. Superripe aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate, licorice and minerals. Big, lush and sweet, with a lightly raisiny quality and a saline thickness to the pungent black cherry and dark plum flavors. This huge wine impresses most with its hedonistic texture but seems a bit youthfully monolithic today. I’d give it at least five to seven years in the cellar.  (Nov 2012)

Wine Advocate 94 points - The 2009 Croft has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, black plum, and touches of glycerine and graphite that are well-defined but persistently broody. The palate is full-bodied with a burly, powerful entry. There is real structure and presence here - a Croft packed full of spicy black fruit with white peppers generously sprinkled over the finish. This is an ambitious Croft that could become a future legend - or might trip over its untrammeled ambition! Tasted May 2013.  (Jun 2013)

Wine Spectator 95 points - Redolent of blackberry and dark fruits, this also features a fascinating mix of mocha, graphite and tobacco flavors. Very juicy as well, which figures into the finish of fine-grained tannins and spice. An exuberant and refined Vintage Port. Best from 2020 through 2050. 5,000 cases made. –KM  (Apr 30 2012)

Quinta da Roeda forms the backbone of the Croft Vintage Porto, produced only in years when vineyard conditions are optimal and warrant a “declared vintage.” Wines from Quinta da Roeda are characteristically plump, full and vigorously fruity, with the hallmark aroma of the gum cistus bush—a character that informs the Croft house style. The grapes are trod by foot in granite lagares to minimize the release of harsh, bitter compounds from skins and seeds, and the wine spends two years aging in vat before bottling. Croft Vintage Porto will continue to develop in the bottle and may be cellared for decades before opening.
Food pairing
Pair with aged cheeses or desserts made with dark chocolate.

Producer
The merchant company that we know today as Croft was founded in 1588, during Elizabeth I’s reign, by Henry Thompson of York, England. Today, Croft is a part of the Fladgate Partnership, three of the most historic and highly regarded Porto houses, including Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca and Croft—a family-owned company that sets the standard to which other Port houses aspire.
