The wine has a deep ruby, red colour. It shows riperaspberries, black currant and mocha flavours on the nose and has dark chocolate and blackberry fruit on the palate. This wine has good length with a dry finish and can mature for a further 7-8 years.
Wine Spectator 87 points - A light black tea note gives way to sanguine-edged plum and blood orange flavors. Lightly singed herb and vanilla accents stitch up the finish. Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now. 2,600 cases imported.-JM  (Jun 15 2015)

Vinous 87 points - (14.2% alcohol, vs. 14% for the 2012): Good dark red. Less fruity on the nose than the 2012 version, showing menthol and mint elements. Conveys a cooler character, even a slight tartness. Boasts plenty of energy but comes across as a bit lean.  (Jun 2015)

Wine maker notes
Winemaking at Kanonkop follows the age-old tradition of being made in open concrete fermenters, but with a slight difference, the tanks are wide and shallow, rather high and deep. This ensures maximum skin contact. Only French Nevers barrels are used for breeding, with the exception of a few experimental barrels each year. All cellaring, bottling and labelling is done on Kanonkop.

Producer
Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines. Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul & Johann Krige. Kanonkop The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.
